One Macon targets jobs, education and sense of place

When it comes to a new push for a common vision for Macon-Bibb County, the name says it all: One Macon.

“One Macon, just in the name, symbolizes so much,” said Cliffard Whitby, one of three chairmen of the One Macon initiative that aims to address some of the city and county’s most pressing problems. “We are finally recognizing that we must work together to make this a better place for every constituency, every political group, every social group, every economic group.”

The story behind Birmingham mayor's and UAB president's trip to New York

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – By now you may have seen the video of Birmingham Mayor William Bell and UAB President Ray Watts extolling the virtues of Birmingham on a business program in New York.

But the trip Bell and Watts took with the Birmingham Business Alliance to the Big Apple was about more than just getting front of the cameras. Some of the most important work took place behind the scenes.

The two-day trip was the fourth annual New York marketing trip the BBA has held to get the word out about the Birmingham region to national media and economic development decision makers. It falls under the BBA's "Blueprint Birmingham" initiative to improve Birmingham's image.

Cultivation Corridor focuses on agricultural, bioscience innovation

The name chosen for Iowa’s newest regional branding initiative in Central Iowa may have a familiar ring to residents of the seven-county Creative Corridor in East Central Iowa, but that’s about where the similarities end.

The Cultivation Corridor brand for a 60-mile radius of Des Moines that includes Ames was created to develop a regional image as a leader in agricultural and bioscience innovation, according to Brent Willett, executive director of the new effort. It’s a title to which no other region has yet laid claim, said Mr. Willett, and one in which the Central Iowa region has a potent concentration of resources.

Bibb schools back "One Macon!"

"One Macon!," a group of community leaders hoping to raise the level of wealth and prosperity, presented to the Bibb County School Board Tuesday night in hopes of getting the system's support.

"We have three major strategies: places, jobs and schools. We want Macon to be a place that people would like to come and live and work and play."

Summit looks at creating jobs, expanding diversity

A unified effort to boost the economy of the eight-county Madison region is starting to make headway, but there’s still a long way to go to diversify the workforce, speakers told a conference on Friday.

The first Madison Region’s Economic Development, Diversity and Leadership Summit — a combined effort of the Madison Region Economic Partnership (MadREP) and the Urban League of Greater Madison — drew about 400 people to Monona Terrace for the daylong event.
