Effort aims to restore Des Moines' urban core to health

Residents of 10 diverse and challenged neighborhoods north of downtown Des Moines often fight to finish their education, to find a job, even to put dinner on the table.

The area, mostly north and west of Interstate Highway 235, now is called the “urban core.” It has a combined population of 26,000, about the same size as Fort Dodge.
